Fields of interest 

Pure and applied plant anatomy. Researching for, writing and editing volumes on the comparative vegetative anatomy of families of monocotyledons and dicotyledons.   Research to aid identification of fragmentary plant material using light and scanning electron microscopy, such as (1) tree roots, in relation to potential tree damage to buildings; (2) plant remains from European archaeological sites; (3) plant material from forensic investigations. Study of tree root spread and recommended planting distances in relation to buildings. Research on tree species selection and tree management for fuel-wood and charcoal production in arid regions of southern Africa and Brazil. Through the Linnean Society of London, and as Honorary Research Fellow at Kew, playing an active role in supporting teaching and research in taxonomy and systematics at all levels.

Job description

A former Chief Editor of Annals of Botany. The Vice-Chairman deputises for the Chairman on all occasions when the Chairman may be absent. As a member of the Company's Executive, the Vice-Chairman is a Director of the Company and a Charitable Trustee. Like all Company Members, the Vice-Chairman also oversees all aspects of the ownership, support and operation of the Company itself and of its three published titles Annals of Botany, AoB PLANTS and AoBBlog.
